History & National Heritage

The Cache La Poudre River played a very important role in the history and development of the region. The river is what initially drew settlers to the area and provided the framework for the development of communities in Northern Colorado. The significant developments in the areas of water use regarding agriculture were the major factors in the lower sections of the river being named a National Heritage Area. The roots of this region are firmly set in the banks of the Poudre River.

A Wild & Scenic River

The Cache La Poudre River canyon was given the privileged status of being a National Wild & Scenic River on October 30, 1986. This status of being the only Wild & Scenic River in Colorado comes with an important responsibility toward stewardship. Every visitor of the Poudre Canyon is responsible for its care. It is important to Leave No Trace when enjoying the river. Users must take any chance to educate others about environmental stewardship of this amazing resource seriously. The Wild & Scenic designation sets the stage to preserve the Poudre River for future generations to enjoy. So, if we are all responsible for our use, the Poudre River will provide experiences that will last a lifetime for all.
